If you have the Oregon Health Plan (OHP), you may have access to far more pregnancy and postpartum support than you realize — including doulas, lactation support, mental health care, transportation, home visiting programs, and more.

Many families assume they have to navigate pregnancy alone or pay out of pocket for support. But Oregon has expanded Medicaid benefits for pregnant and postpartum families, and those services can make a huge difference in how supported, informed, and empowered you feel throughout your journey.

Whether this is your first baby or your fourth, understanding your OHP benefits can help you get the care you deserve.

What Is OHP?

The Oregon Health Plan is Oregon’s Medicaid program. It provides free or low-cost healthcare coverage to qualifying Oregon residents, including pregnant people, babies, and families.

Depending on your plan, you may be enrolled through a Coordinated Care Organization (CCO) like:

  • CareOregon

  • Health Share of Oregon

  • PacificSource

  • Trillium Community Health Plan

  • Jackson Care Connect

These organizations help manage your care and connect you with providers and support services.

Pregnancy Services Covered by OHP

Prenatal Care

OHP covers routine prenatal care throughout pregnancy, including:

  • Prenatal checkups

  • Bloodwork and labs

  • Ultrasounds

  • Screening tests

  • Nutrition counseling

  • High-risk pregnancy monitoring when needed

Getting consistent prenatal care can help identify concerns early and support a healthier pregnancy and birth.

Doula Support Is Covered

One of the most exciting changes in Oregon maternity care is expanded doula coverage through OHP.

A doula provides emotional, physical, and informational support during pregnancy, labor, birth, and postpartum recovery. Research shows doulas can help families feel more confident, informed, and supported throughout the process.

Depending on your plan and provider availability, OHP may cover:

  • Prenatal visits

  • Labor and birth support

  • Postpartum visits

  • Breastfeeding support

  • Resource connection and advocacy

For many families, having a doula can make birth feel less overwhelming and more empowering.

Lactation & Breastfeeding Support

Breastfeeding can be beautiful — and also incredibly challenging.

OHP often covers lactation support services, including visits with lactation consultants who can help with:

  • Latch issues

  • Milk supply concerns

  • Pumping guidance

  • Pain during feeding

  • Tongue tie referrals

  • Feeding plans for newborns

Many plans also cover breast pumps during pregnancy or after birth.

Mental Health Support During Pregnancy & Postpartum

Mental health matters just as much as physical health.

OHP covers mental health services related to:

  • Anxiety

  • Depression

  • Birth trauma

  • Postpartum mood disorders

  • Substance use recovery

  • Parenting stress and overwhelm

Support may include therapy, counseling, peer support, or psychiatric care depending on your needs.

You do not need to “wait until it gets really bad” to seek support.

Transportation to Medical Appointments

If transportation is a barrier, OHP may help cover rides to medical appointments.

This can include:

  • Prenatal visits

  • Postpartum checkups

  • Pediatric appointments

  • Specialist care

  • Mental health visits

Many members don’t realize transportation assistance is available — but it can be incredibly helpful for growing families.

Home Visiting & Parenting Programs

Some OHP members may qualify for home visiting programs that provide support during pregnancy and early parenting.

These programs may offer:

  • Parenting education

  • Infant development support

  • Breastfeeding guidance

  • Emotional support

  • Help accessing community resources

These services are designed to support the whole family — not just the pregnancy.

Postpartum Care Beyond the 6-Week Visit

Healing after birth takes time.

OHP now provides extended postpartum coverage in Oregon, helping families access care well beyond the traditional six-week postpartum visit.

Postpartum support may include:

  • Physical recovery care

  • Pelvic floor therapy referrals

  • Mental health services

  • Lactation support

  • Birth control counseling

  • Ongoing primary care

You deserve support during the entire transition into parenthood — not just immediately after birth.

How to Find Out What Your Specific OHP Plan Covers

Coverage can vary slightly depending on your CCO and provider network.

A few good steps:

  1. Call the member services number on the back of your OHP card

  2. Ask specifically about maternity, doula, lactation, and postpartum benefits

  3. Verify whether your provider is enrolled with your plan

  4. Ask if prior authorization is required for any services

Many providers are happy to help you understand your benefits and navigate the process.

You Deserve Support

Pregnancy and postpartum are major life transitions. You shouldn’t have to figure everything out alone — and you shouldn’t have to be wealthy to receive quality support.

If you have OHP, you may already have access to services that can make your pregnancy, birth, and postpartum experience more supported, informed, and connected.

Sometimes the hardest part is simply knowing what’s available.

And now you do.
